Mahabaleshwar is a vast plateau of about 150 kilometers bound by gorgeous valleys on all sides. It is located about 120 kms southwest from Pune and 285 kms from Mumbai. The highest point in Mahabaleshwar reaches 1,438 m above sea level. The highest peak is known as the Wilson point aka Sunrise point.
Mahabaleshwar consists of three villages Malcolm Peth, Old Kshetra Mahabaleshwar an part of the Shindola village. For all the ones who are unaware of it, Mahabaleshwar is also the origin of the river Krishna. Legend has it that Krishna is actually an incarnation of Lord Vishnu himself. Three are two tributaries of this river, who are said to be Lord Brahma (the creator) and Lord Shiva (the destroyer) themselves.
Mahabaleshwar is never too hot because of it's height and neither is it never too cold because of it's close proximity to the Arabian sea. The duration of the higher temperature is short.
The jungle here is thick and produces many commercial as well as medicinal trees and plants. The wild life is limited to foxes, jackals, and wild boars. Deers and bisons are found in the "Brahma-Aranya area. Panthers are rare. The bird that is made famous by the Urdu poets and bards, 'Bulbul' is found everywhere in the plateau. The weather of Mahabaleshwar is healthy containing an ideal of 20% oxygen which is often augmented in foggy weather of late summers and early monsoon, when the plateau is covered by thick mist. The water contains a meager percentage of iron which helps to increase hemoglobin in the blood.
This place as heavenly as it is was established as a health resort in 1829 AD. It was a jail for the Chinese and the Malay convicts from 1834 to 1864. The capacity of the jail was 120 prisoners. These prisoners introduced cultivation of red potatoes, strawberries, cane weaving and bamboo baskets. Many of those prisoners stayed in Mahabaleshwar after they were released. It is a vast evergreen plateau with long winding roads, horse rides and footpath along the forest. Honey and Chikki, Channas, waling sticks. Fruits like strawberries, blue berries, raspberries ,gooseberries, mulberries grow there in abundance.
